If you need a bike for non competitive general cycling then the GT Transeo is one to consider. I came across it when looking for a bike that would work for commuting, leisure (with the family) a bit of training and probably get mistreated a fair bit.
This could involve anything from bashing along a few gravel tracks or canal towpaths, to faster cycling on the road for fitness. Obviously this all pointed to a hybrid of some sort. There were several versions of the GT Transeo to look at, along with other brands at around the £400 price.
On the 'must have' list were some lockable front shocks for versatility and for protecting from jarring on gravel (yes, a bit wimpish I know). Also the gears needed to give a good road speed and also have a granny gear. Thirdly, straight handlebars, as it was inevitable that I would be in heavy traffic and I'm not a great risk taker. The Transeo matched those needs. ( At this price level the shocks requirement actually turned out to rule out quite a few bikes ).
When looking generally at hybrids, I noticed some that had quite a curved look, for want of a better description; particularly with the handlebars. Personally I thought they lacked a bit of cool, so ultimately the choice became one between a couple of bikes: a Cannondale and the GT Transeo.
As it happened I had a leisure ride coming up at the weekend, the local bike shop had a good offer on the Transeo 3 V-brake and I'm impatient at the best of times, so out came the card.
GT Transeo Specifications:
The frame of the GT Transeo is aluminium as you might expect, in what GT call a sport fitness geometry (pretty close to mtb). Forks have 50mm travel, lockout, disc and rack mounts. Drivetrain was all Shimano, with an 8 speed cassette, Alivio rear mech and shifters, Altus crankset. Rims were Alex with some average factory mtb tyres. Nothing else of particular interest.
Changes made:
As it was used for a fair bit of road cycling initially put a pair of Schwalbe Marathons on it. Also got rid of the saddle which was too wide and put a nice Fizik Pave on for comfort. Fitted ends to the bars just to give an alternative position.
Performance:
Had it for a couple of years now and no problems. Doesn't flex too much if you push it and feels very stable and solid on the usual road potholes. Shifting is easy and only had to make one minor adjustment in all this time. Quite hard work on the hills as its quite heavy, but of course steams along downhill and the momentum gets you well up the other side !
All in all, happy with the bike for the price and much cooler than a typical hybrid.
